Amana Radar Range Microwave Oven, 1975
Amana's Radarange, introduced in 1967, was the first compact microwave oven made for home use.
It was called the "Radarange" because of a happy accident by an engineer who was working for the defense contractor Raytheon in the 1940s. Percy Spencer was using a magnetron, a device that generates the radio waves that are at the heart of radar technology.
In 1967, Raytheon introduced the first popular home model, the countertop Radarange, priced at $495, through its recently acquired company Amana Corp. Defense companies were the leading manufacturers of microwave ovens through the 1970s.
By 1972, Litton (Litton Atherton Division, Minneapolis) introduced two new microwave ovens, priced at $349 and $399, to tap into the market estimated at $750 million by 1976.
