Little Evie Tornquist Karlsson Cut-Out Paper Doll?!

Well, I do remember Evie Torquist (Karlsson) from the 1970's, but I do NOT remember this Paper Doll.

Perhaps it wasn't sold in the U.S. and was only available in Europe.  Or, I just didn't know (or care) to look for it.

While I enjoyed some of Evie's music, I can't say I would have thought of her as someone to be in Paper Doll form.

Just a quirky, and interesting, item!

(Sweden, circa 1977.)

THE KING OF HAIR - A CANCER TRIBUTE

His 'Beautiful Hair'

Cancer Tribute:

'The King of Hair'

Now there you were the king of hair

without his crown & glory,

And there you were without a care

now full of so much worry...

What can be said of all that dread,

the pain and time...

The hours spent on knees so bent,

with pleading cry.

It's strange to see the king of hair

without his crowning glory,

It's a shame to see one so carefree

now full of all that worry...

MARCIA GETS BRACES: BRADY BUNCH EPISODE FROM 1970 "BRACE YOURSELF"

*MARCIA BRADY MISERABLE IN BRACES*

ARE BRACES REALLY NECESSARY?

Brace Yourself (13 Feb. 1970)

Marcia becomes convinced she's "ugly, ugly, ugly!" after having to wear braces. *Season 1, Episode 20

PictureThis Looks Painful!
Does Your Child Really Need Braces?

It is estimated that in 90% of cases, the answer to this question is NO!

And - there is no rush!!  Take your time to really think about this important - and costly - decision.

In an article by Avery Hurt that appeared in Better Homes & Gardens magazine he tells us that:

Orthodontic work and braces can be an elective procedure more often than many parents realize.

According to the National Institutes of Health, most misaligned bites (malocclusions) are so minor that they do not require treatment.

Yet, currently, nearly 4 million children under the age of 18 in the U.S. and Canada are wearing some kind of braces.

Their parents are paying anywhere from $3,000 for a basic set to upwards of $10,000 for newer "invisible" braces.
One of the reasons for the rush into braces then may be the fact that this procedure is very lucrative.

It is NEVER too late to get braces if you happen to change your mind.
Many adults now wear braces, and with excellent results.

Children in their teens and pre-teens have not yet reached full growth and maturity.

Good nutrition can go a long way to ensure proper growth of the dental arch.

If you wait and give it time, the teeth will very often re-align themselves without wearing braces.

Some other points to keep in mind include:

  • High Cost
  • Complications
  • Side Effects
  • Painfulness

(Just look at all the products available below that deal with just the PAIN of having braces - Pain Reliever, Wax, Lip Guards, etc.)
There is a lot more to this issue that is important to know about.

17th ANNUAL LIBERTY BOWL TICKET FROM 1975

With all the 'Bowl' Games going on recently, it seemed appropriate to post a ticket from the Liberty Bowl in 1975.

This ticket shows a price of 8.50; ticket prices for the Liberty Bowl now range from 55.00 to 70.00.

The Liberty Bowl is an annual U.S. American college football bowl game played in late December or early January since 1959.

Since 1965, the game has been held at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

For its first five years, it was played in Philadelphia.

Since 2004, the game has been sponsored by Memphis-based auto parts retailer AutoZone.

The game is now known as the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, and is the home field of the University of Memphis Tigers football team.

1970's FRITO-LAY MASCOT W.C. FRITOS

"Greetings My Little Chip-A-Dees!"

With the Frito Bandito 'retiring' in 1971, he was replaced by W.C. Fritos, modeled after 1930's era comedian and actor W.C. Fields.

Some of W.C. Fritos' famous bylines included

"Greetings my little chip-a-dees."

"W.C. Fritos here."    AND

"Anybody who love Fritos Corn Chips can't be all bad."
Some W.C. Fritos themed items in the 1970's included pencils, erasers, stickers, and even Valentine's Day cards.

At least we do still have 'The Greatest Chip in the World!'

THE FRITO BANDITO - RETIRED FROM TAKING FRITOS IN 1971

See/Hear the Song HERE

The Frito Bandito was the cartoon mascot for Fritos corn chips from 1967 to 1971.

The Frito Bandito campaign included a song sung to the tune of the well-known traditional Mexican song "Cielito Lindo":

Ay, ay, ay, ay! oh, I am dee Frito Bandito. I like Frito's Corn Chips. I love them, I do. I want Frito's corn chips. I'll take them, from you.
Later ads used an alternate verse:

Ay, ay, ay, ay, oh, I am the Frito Bandito. Give me Frito Corn chips and I'll be your friend. The Frito Bandito you must not offend.

The character was voiced by Mel Blanc, who used an exaggerated Mexican accent not unlike another character of his, Speedy Gonzales.

The Frito Bandito spoke broken English and robbed people of their Frito corn chips, a reference to the “Mexican bandit” stereotype in western movies.

He also complained that he was being pursued by the “Frito Bureau of Investigation.”  (wikipedia.com)

Original Fritos - still available & still the best Corn Chip out there:

Munch, munch, munch a bunch of Fritos Corn Chips!

GEE YOUR HAIR SMELLS TERRIFIC FRAGRANCE SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER FROM THE 70'S

This shampoo really did make your hair very 'fragrant'

Although it doesn't smell exactly the same as in the 70's, this description explains why:

One whiff of Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific brought us back to the time this shampoo and conditioner first hit the scene, and discos and mood rings were still in vogue.
Since “Gee” debuted over four decades ago, the International Fragrance Association's (IFA) has listed deer musk, one of its key scents, as an unacceptable ingredient.
We recreated our version of “Gee” using the original “recipe” without deer musk and found that it smells very similar to the flowery, spicy scent we grew up with.
"Love the smell—reminds me of the '70s, halter tops, and bell bottoms!" wrote customer Joy Johnson, of Hedgesville, WV.
Formulated for today's hair, Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific will leave your locks clean, soft, and shiny, and smelling…well…terrific!
Available in shampoo / conditioner. 12 oz. bottles.

Even if it doesn't smell the same, it will make you happy just seeing it there as it 'takes you back'...

1970's AD FOR COLORFUL 'TICKLE' ROLL-ON ANTIPERSPIRANT DEODORANT

These colorful roll-on antiperspirant dispensers made it more fun to put on your deodorant, even if it didn't really 'tickle'.

But, this magazine print ad from the 1970's does say that:

"Staying drier is nicer with a little tickle..."

There's also a .15 Coupon in the ad, but it's probably (very) expired.

The ad goes on to say:

"Want an antiperspirant that's really new and different? Tickle is the first roll-on with a big wide ball."
"Its surface is just about 4 times the size of most others.  To go on fast and smooth."
"Tickle comes in 4 fresh fragrances: Citrus, Herbal, Floral, Unscented."
"Tickle has a quick-drying formula. And, of course, Tickle really works. It'll help keep you dry all day."
"Make yourself happy with a little Tickle!"

Tickle did look really cute sitting on the vanity cabinet;
It was a piece of 70's 'designer art' in itself...

With a brightly colored rounded top, matching hourglass dispenser and clear polka-dotted case.

SOFT & DRI SPRAY ANTIPERSPIRANT DEODORANT 1970's PRINT AD

This print ad from a 1970's magazine shows two girls arguing over the benefits of Soft & Dri Antiperspirant Spray Deodorant:

"I say it does."  "And I say it doesn't."  "Soft & Dri does help keep me dry. Really dry."  "Soft & Dri doesn't sting me. Even right after shaving."

Of course, and as intended, both are right.  An argument meant to show all the 'good' things Soft & Dri does, as well as all the 'bad' things it doesn't.

So 'clever' - but, I do really like the pastel crochet hats, not to mention the nice use of pink and orange together in the floral motif on the cans.

This brand is still available today, in Powder Soft, Floral Bouquet, and Soft Scent; by Dial.

1970's PINK PANTHER WALL POSTER

The Pink Panther was very 'de rigeur' in the 70's, pardon my French.  :)

There were posters, toys, cereal, and even a cartoon show.

This particular poster design is still available today in large and 'mini' sizes.

The 70's purple bedroom with a Pink Panther poster lives on!

70's SWISS MISS HOT COCOA MIX BOX AD

There's also a special offer for a cute Swiss Miss Rag Doll on the back of the box.

PILLSBURY FIGURINES DIET BAR OF THE 1970's

Pillsbury Figurines Diet Bars  had two thin, crispy wafers layered with a delicious filling and outer coating.

The ad above reads: "Don't skip nutrition. Skip with Figurines."  Below that it says:

"Two Figurines diet bars provide the protein, vitamins and minerals of a sensible meal - without the meal."

They had a 'tag-line' in their ad jingle that was sung to the tune of Tangerine:

"Figurines help keep you as you are...with a calorie rate of 138 a bar - my shape belongs to Figurines!"

1972 PINK PANTHER FLAKES CEREAL COMMERCIAL AD SONG LYRICS

Pink Panther Flakes Cereal

Post Cereals co-sponsored The Pink Panther Show, a Saturday morning kid's show, in 1972. This cereal was created as tie-in for that program.

The cereal consisted of bright, bubblegum-pink, sugar-coated corn flakes.

Most people remember Pink Panther Flakes as being extraordinarily sweet-tasting. The "pink" didn't add a distinct new flavor, so the taste could be compared to ordinary Sugar Frosted Flakes with more sugar.

One interesting feature of this cereal was that it's pink coloring ran off of the flakes and into the milk almost immediately after the flakes got wet.

A 1973 television ad staring the Pink Panther featured the following jingle, sung in-part to the Pink Panther theme song by Henry Mancini:

Pink Panther Flakes are pink
As sweet as you can (inaudible) the color of pink
Pink Panther Flakes are pink
As sweet as you can (inaudible) the color of pink
Tickle me pink!

Hey Pink Panther! We love Pink Panther Flakes
So pink, so sweet and they're new
We love their one, two, three, four, five, six, seven...
Eight different vitamins
Just as much as we love you

The back of the very first box offered this description of the cereal:

"Have breakfast with the Pink Panther! Pink Panther Flakes are pre-sweetened, pink frosted corn flakes. They're fun to eat, good tasting and fortified with 8 essential vitamins. Try 'em. You'll love 'em..."

1970's POP-TARTS AD WITH MILTON THE TOASTER!

This ad from the 1970's for Kellogg's Pop-Tarts toaster pastries featured an animated toaster named Milton.

Here, Milton the talking toaster is telling us that Pop-Tarts have, "Real fruit preserves in a tasty pastry crust!"

The ones in the ad above have that characteristic 'crunchy' frosting topped with yummy, colorful sprinkles.

The first Pop-Tarts came out in four different flavors:Apple, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Brown Sugar Cinnamon.

Originally not frosted when first introduced in 1964, it was later determined that frosting could withstand the toaster.

The first frosted Pop-Tarts were officially released in 1967 - Just in time to become a 70's breakfast and afternoon snack staple!

(Personal all-time favorites: The un-frosted versions of Strawberry, Chocolate, and Brown Sugar Cinnamon.)

Today, there are a wide variety of Pop-Tart flavors, including Chocolate Chip, S'mores, Raspberry, and even French Toast.

And, thankfully, still readily available in stores and online:

PERFECT 70's SNACK: CARNATION BREAKFAST BAR PEANUT BUTTER & GRANOLA

Why, oh why did they stop making these?!  They were SO good -

All that dense yummy, chocolatey, crunchy, peanut-y, vitamin-y goodness -- so perfect with a nice, cold glass of milk.

As the box said, " One bar with a glass of milk makes a complete meal."  Well, it was certainly filling and satisfying, anyway.

Just gone except for our memories... Or are they?

Carnation has just come out with some new Breakfast Bars in both Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate!

Some other brands I've found that are close are the Peanut Butter Chocolate flavors in the Special-K brand and the PowerBar Crunch.

Happy Munching!!
