THE 1970s ROLLER DISCO ERA
Rollerskating in the 70s evolved from a nostalgic pastime into a massive cultural phenomenon fueled by the disco era. Complete with flashing neon lights, thumping bass music, and iconic fashion, it transformed local rinks and city streets into vibrant social hubs of carefree joy and self-expression.
But even before this, roller skates were a common scene in driveways, cement basements and paved cul-de-sacs everywhere, indoors or out - as well as good old-fashioned wood floor skating rinks with just a mirror ball.
Whatever your style - whether 4-wheel quad or In-line - Roller Skating is making a big comeback. Still just as carefree and joyful as ever!
Iconic Fashion & Gear
The culture was as much about looking good as it was about skating.
Apparel: Skaters hit the floor in high-waisted bell-bottoms, brightly colored rainbow tube socks, short-shorts, and psychedelic patterned shirts.
The Skates: Metal wheels were replaced by large, smooth rubberized polymer wheels, which gave skaters better grip allowing for both outdoor skating and smoother indoor gliding. High-top quad skates (with two wheels in the front and two in the back) were the gold standard.
Street Skating
While roller rinks were the main attraction, Outdoor skating exploded in popularity too—especially in sunny locales where skaters took their moves to the sidewalks, boardwalks, parks and city streets.
